Lucky B was built the same way we’re building our life—by hand, with intention, and a whole lot of learning along the way.
To really understand Lucky B, you have to go back a bit—back to quiet seasons, hard seasons, and the moments when creativity became more than a hobby. It became an outlet, a grounding force, and eventually, a way of life.
How Lucky B Started
Like a lot of people, our story shifted during COVID. Lockdown slowed everything down, and in that stillness, we found ourselves needing something tangible—something creative, something real—to pour our energy into.
For Mackenze, leather wasn’t new. She grew up in rural Washington, riding horses for a local trainer whose wife did leatherwork. Summers were spent helping out, learning bits and pieces, and watching craftsmanship up close. Leather was always there—but it stayed tucked away in the vault of memory for years.
Fast forward to 2019. After moving to Helena, Montana for a life adventure with her then-boyfriend Chace, Mackenze found herself without horses for the first time. That familiar connection to leather came back, filling a gap she didn’t fully realize was there. What started as dabbling quickly turned into something deeper—a creative outlet that felt grounding, challenging, and fulfilling all at once.
A few years later, married and back home in the area we both grew up—Odessa, WA and Reardan, WA—we found ourselves reconnecting with our roots. The pace slowed. The values became clearer. Working with our hands, caring for our space, and building a life that felt honest and intentional led us right to where we are now.
Lucky B grew naturally from all of that.
Built With Our Own Hands
Leatherwork teaches patience. Every cut, every stamp, every stitch matters—and once it’s done, it tells the truth of how it was made. That philosophy extends far beyond the studio.
As we remodeled our home, built our life together, and pushed through difficult seasons, a phrase kept coming up between us: Make Your Own Luck.
It wasn’t something we planned. It was just something we said—during long days, hard decisions, and moments when we had to choose perseverance over comfort. Over time, it became more than a saying. It became our mindset.
What “Make Your Own Luck” Means to Us
For us, making your own luck isn’t about forcing outcomes or pretending things are easy. It’s about learning from hard mistakes, choosing to see the bright side, and letting life come as it will—while still showing up and doing the work.
It’s about building something piece by piece. About honoring where you came from while still reaching for where you’re going. Today, it’s our manifesto—a reminder of the roads we’ve walked and the goals we’re still chasing.
Why Leather and Homestead Life Go Hand in Hand
Leather is a storytelling material. It lasts. It wears in, not out. It carries memories and can be passed down through generations—just like the homesteading lifestyle we’re building.
The same way we share our grandparents’ recipes, tend our garden, care for our animals, and hold onto heirloom pieces like old purses and belts, leather helps us keep tradition alive. It connects past and present in a way few materials can.
Homesteading and leatherwork both ask you to slow down. To value quality over convenience. To believe that the things worth keeping are the things worth caring for.

Lucky B isn’t just about what we make—it’s about how we live.
Our days are split between the studio, the land, and learning how to be more self-sufficient. We’re figuring it out as we go, embracing the imperfect, and choosing a life rooted in craftsmanship, care, and intention.
